WebMO Supported Web Browsers
|
The following is a list of browsers that are supported by WebMO, organized by platform. WebMO compatibility is limited by vendor support for Java, LiveConnect and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) technology, which continues to improve.
Windows
Macintosh OS X
Linux/Unix
Notes
- Installing Sun Java Plug-in for Windows
Although the Microsoft Java VM was distributed with Windows 9X and early versions of Windows XP, it is no longer maintained or distributed by Microsoft and it lacks many modern Java2 features, e.g., Swing GUI. Consequently, WebMO 9+ requires that the Sun Java Plug-in be installed on Windows machines, regardless of browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari for Windows).
The Sun Java plug-in is available for free download from Sun. Download the latest non-beta release of the Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) for Windows. Double click on the installation file, and follow the prompts to install the plug-in.
The 'Browser' tab of the 'Java Plug-In' control panel can be used to enable or disable the plug-in for each browser. This can be used to toggle between the Microsoft and Sun Java Virtual Machine when running Java applets in Internet Explorer.
- Installing Sun Java Plug-in for Mac OS X
The Sun Java Plug-in is distributed with Mac OS X. If necessary, it can be updated through Apple: Software Update...
- Installing Sun Java Plug-in for Linux
This Sun Java plug-in is available for free download from Sun. Download the latest non-beta release of the Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) for Linux. Install the JRE,
% chmod a+x jre-6{version{-linux-i586-rpm.bin
% ./jre-6{version{-linux-i586-rpm.bin (agree to license)
% su
# rpm -Uhv jre-6{version{-linux-i586-rpm
The JRE may need to be enabled as a Mozilla plugin by creating a symbolic link to a plugin library of the JRE. This library is located at
/usr/java/jre1.6.0/jre/i386/lib/libnpjp2.so
or
/usr/java/jre1.6.0/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
or
/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.xxx/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
or
/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.xxx/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
depending on which version of gcc your browser was compiled with. For newer versions of the browser, first try the ns7 location. If that fails, try the ns610-gcc32 or ns610 location.
To enable use of Java within Firefox, one must create a link in the browser plugin directory to the Sun plug-in file . The browser plug-in directory is most likely /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ for Firefox and Mozilla-based browsers
# ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
