I had a user reporting issues logging in via PAM. There was no entry in /var/log/secure so something was stopping it working early on (other users were logging in fine). Having used debug statements in the code I found that it was failing when reading the user profile and finding out whether it had External Authentication set for the user. Dumping out the contents of the users.db I could see what every entry in the user's profile after the folder entry was corrupt. I noticed there is a fixed 2048 character size for the profile so lots of folders could reduce the size available for other entries. I think the size of folders should be restricted to allow the database to be able to be consistent and all entries written.

Thomas, could use send me an example / snippet of that entry on the users.db file? I've never seen this happen before -- at worst, I would expect a folder name to get truncated!
