WebMO System Requirements
The requirements for installating and running WebMO vary by platform. The following lists provide a concise summary of the WebMO system requirements. Detailed installation instructions are also provided.
Hardware
WebMO has very modest requirements and will run on any modern computer running Linux, Mac OS X, or Windows. The hardware level should not depend on WebMO, but rather on the performance desired from the underlying computational chemistry programs, specifically, how large the jobs are (RAM), how many jobs need to run simultaneously (CPU cores), and how many jobs will be stored on the system (disk space).
Several recommended scenarios are presented below:
- Minimum
- 1 CPU core
- 4 GB RAM
- 5 GB free disk space (10 MB for WebMO files; 1+ GB for computational chemistry engines; 4+ GB for user files and scratch files)
- Teaching
- 2-4 CPU cores
- 8-16 GB RAM
- 1+ TB disk
- Research
- 4-16 CPU cores
- 16-64 GB RAM
- 4+ TB disk (recommended: separate /, /home, /scratch partitions)
- Cluster
- Head node
- Storage node
- Optional: web-server node
- Compute nodes
- Cloud
- 1-4 vCPU's
- 4-16 GB RAM
- 50+ GB persistent disk
Linux
- CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, or SuSE
- Web server (Apache) capable of executing CGI scripts (included with Linux)
- Perl interpreter version 5.0 or higher (included with Linux)
- One or more installed Linux computational chemistry programs
For installation details, see the Linux installation instructions.
Mac OS X
- Mac OS X 10.X
- Web server (Apache) capable of executing CGI scripts (included in OS X)
- Perl interpreter version 5.0 or higher (included in OS X)
- One or more installed OS X computational chemistry programs
For installation details, see the Mac OS X installation instructions.
Windows
- Windows native installation - to be deprecated in WebMO 24
- Windows 7, 8, 10, 11
- Apache for Windows (separate installation)
- Strawberry Perl for Windows (separate installation)
- One or more installed Windows computational chemistry programs
For installation details, see the Windows installation instructions.
- Windows Subsystem for Linux - recommended for WebMO 20+
- Windows 10 or 11
- Linux distribution (available on Microsoft Store for free)
- One or more installed Linux computational chemistry programs
For installation details, see the Windows Subsystem for Linux installation instructions.
Cloud
- Account on Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, or Microsoft Azure
- Virtual machine (as low as $1/day when machine is running and $1/month when machine is off)
- One or more installed Linux computational chemistry programs
- Recommended: static IP address, DNS name service
For installation details, see the Google Cloud Platform installation instructions,
Amazon Web Services installation instructions, or Microsoft Azure installation instructions.
