WebMO Testimonials
WebMO in the News
- Gaussian, Inc. Highly Recommends WebMO (Gaussian News, December, 2000):
"[WebMO is] an exciting web-based interface to Gaussian and other computational chemistry packages designed to make is easy to introduce students to electronic structure calculations and to run them from their own personal computers. ... It provides an easy, web browser-based interface to Gaussian which enables students to complete course exercises without needing any of the required software installed on their own computer. ... All in all, our experience with WebMO have been extremely positive. It is a well-thought designed and implemented package which makes running Gaussian calculations on a central server straightforward and simple, and we highly recommend it to anyone - educators and researchers alike - looking for a means of providing Gaussian access in such a manner."
- Chem Computing Made Simple (Science Magazine, August 10, 2001):
"...WebMO [is] a simple, Web browser-based interface for using popular chem software packages such as MOPAC and Gaussian. You draw the molecule's structure, and the output--including the molecule's transition states and infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra--appears in an easy-to-understand format."
- Digital Briefs - New Software and Websites for the Chemical Enterprise (C&E News, April 8, 2002):
"WebMO is a Web-based interface to computational programs such as Gaussian, Gamess, and Mopac. The user draws a molecule using a 3-D editor, sets up the calculation, submits the job, and views the results graphically, all within a standard Web browser. The WebMO website has a working demo where anyone can run small jobs as well as a free download area, technical support for researchers, and curriculum support material for educators. WebMO is simple enough for undergraduate computational chemistry curriculum and flexible enough for computational chemistry research."
- Harvard University Uses WebMO to Teach Chemistry (IBM Systems Magazine, May 2007):
"WebMO provides an intuitive graphical front end for drawing molecules and submitting jobs for calculation using the cluster.... So the students can focus on the chemistry, the software interface is as simple as opening a Web browser on their own computer, following the instructions given to them and submitting their jobs."
- Using WebMO to Teach VSEPR in Introductory Chemistry (Journal of Chemical Education, April 2011):
"The input to MOPAC and GAMESS is sufficiently complicated to make them unattractive for use in introductory chemistry; however, the availability of a convenient interface in WebMO to prepare the input to these programs has removed that impediment to their use."
- Integration of Computational Chemistry into the Undergraduate Organic Chemistry Laboratory Curriculum (Journal of Chemical Education, May 2016):
"We utilize computational chemistry in a high-enrollment (>1200 students/year), undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory course in a manner similar to that of organic chemistry researchers. We have employed WebMO as a web-based, easy-to-use, and free front-end interface for Gaussian09 that allows our students to complete ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations throughout the curriculum.
Most of the classroom and laboratory instruction students receive, including molecular modeling, is provided by teaching assistants or through prerecorded streaming video delivered via the course Web site. ... Students can access WebMO via any Internet connection and are thus not required to be physically present in a departmental computer room. ... This current implementation of computational chemistry, employing a WebMO cluster-based approach, is based upon and has replaced the previously published module that used Spartan Student Edition (SpartanST) on approximately 50 PCs in a computer lab.
Thus, WebMO is a convenient and inexpensive option for computational chemistry regardless of institutional computational resources." - WebMO: Web-Based Computational Chemistry Calculations in Education and Research (WIREs: Computational Molecular Science, June 2021):
"WebMO is a web-based interface for all major quantum chemistry programs. The web interface provides a 3-D molecular editor, pre-defined calculations types, job submission and monitoring, visualization of results, and user management tools. Barriers to using state-of-the-art computational chemistry in teaching and research are minimized through WebMO's universal accessibility, its intuitive and uniform interface to all programs, no software to install on client computers, and support for multiple users with a single instance."
WebMO Forum Posts and Emails
- "This is exactly the type of program I've been looking for to use in our Advanced Organic course at Truman State University. I want to expose the class to some "real" ab initio methods without having to teach them unix, vi, etc. I also don't want 20 students with login accounts on my various workstations. WebMO makes all of these non-issues. The web-only access helps keep my machines secure, and the GUI is intuitive. I particularly love the plots of spectra. Very nicely done."
- "I have just upgraded my installation. ... The process was completely painless, the instructions clear and concise. This is easily the simplest package to install."
- "I would like to add my congratulations to the WebMO developers and staff. ... I'm running WebMO for high school students and teachers in the state of North Carolina, and the kids and teachers love the interface and the ability to do meaningful computational chemistry activities. In our proposal to fund this project, we projected 3-6 months for installation and testing of the WebMO interface and the various codes. We were production-ready in less than 3 WEEKS."
- "I am a recent convert to WebMO Pro. I would like to thank you for your excellent program, and the outstanding support I received in installing Suse 11 Linux, Gaussian and WebMO. We now have 2 fast Xeon servers. ... Although I have a fair amount of Windows XP/Server experience, I am a Linux newbie, and it took a week of fiddling part-time to get these systems built and calculating. They are completely stable and have run hundreds of Gaussian jobs in the last month. Thanks!"
- I thought I would add to the praise for the recent WebMO version. I recently purchased a i7-980x computer for home and installed some modeling software to 'play around with' on the weekends (gamess, mopac7). I was able to install Apache, Perl, WebMO this morning. ... I even added some additional gamess keywords to the tmpl file for geometry optimizations. Because the structure is so intuitive, this was simple. And it worked wonderfully. Thank you for making such a useful and intuitive tool for exploring QM calcs.
- "The release of java-free version 17 is fantastic! Thank you, WebMO team, for this release. I am looking forward to using WebMO with my students."
- "Thanks for the info - we will switch over to WebMO 20 asap. It is a FABULOUS tool, you guys should be proud. WebMO has allowed easy access for my colleagues and students. As a result we are using it for our entire first-year chem class (220 HMC students), pchem lab, frosh lab, and for advanced courses."
- I was able to perform the upgrade to version 22 with no troubles. Thanks for your patience in the purchasing process. And for providing such excellent documentation to remind me how to do the upgrade (after a five year interval).
